At Green Door Psychology & Assessment, we view assessment as a collaborative process designed to help individuals and families better understand learning, attention, development, and social-emotional functioning. We combine standardized, evidence-based tools with thoughtful clinical interpretation to build a clear picture of the whole person.

Our work is guided by a strengths-based, neuro-affirming, and person-centred philosophy. That means we do not focus only on areas of difficulty or reduce people to scores, symptoms, or labels. Instead, we aim to understand each person in context, including their strengths, lived experiences, patterns of functioning, and the environments in which they learn, work, and relate to others.

When diagnosis is appropriate, we provide it clearly and thoughtfully to support understanding and access to services. At the same time, we believe meaningful assessment goes beyond diagnosis alone. Our goal is to offer insight that is practical, respectful, and genuinely useful, so clients and families leave with greater clarity and a more confident sense of next steps at school, work, and home.

Our Process

What The Assessment Process Looks Like

  • Intake Interview
  • Information Gathering
  • Direct Testing
  • Report Writing
  • Feedback Meeting
We begin with a clinical intake interview to understand the concerns that brought you in, the questions you hope the assessment will answer, and any relevant background information. This may include developmental, academic, medical, social-emotional, or mental health history, depending on the type of assessment. This step helps ensure the evaluation is focused, appropriate, and tailored to your needs.

After the intake, we gather additional information that helps us better understand the broader picture. Reviewing this information helps place test results in context and supports a more accurate and meaningful understanding of the individual.
This may include:
  • questionnaires and rating scales
  • previous psychological, psychoeducational, or medical assessment reports
  • school records, report cards, and individualized learning support plans
  • relevant medical, developmental, or mental health history
  • background information from parents or caregivers
  • input from teachers, physicians, or other professionals, when appropriate
Not every assessment requires all of these. The specific information gathered will depend on the reason for referral and the questions being explored.

Direct testing involves selected standardized assessment measures based on the referral question and areas being explored. Depending on the type of evaluation, this may include tasks related to thinking and reasoning, attention, memory, academic skills, language, executive functioning, or social-emotional functioning.
Testing may take place over one or multiple appointments, depending on the type and scope of the assessment. Sessions are structured and supportive, with care taken to ensure the process feels manageable and respectful.

Once all information has been gathered, the results are carefully reviewed and interpreted as a whole. This includes looking at patterns across testing, background history, observations, and collateral information. A comprehensive written report is then prepared to summarize the findings, clarify diagnoses when appropriate, and provide individualized recommendations.

The feedback meeting is an opportunity to review the results together, discuss what they mean, and answer any questions. We explain findings in clear, accessible language and focus on helping clients and families leave with a stronger understanding of the individual’s profile, as well as practical next steps for support at school, work, home, or in daily life.
